UT Capture the Flag VIII
Congratulations to The League of Shadows

Congratulations to The League of Shadows on winning MLCTF VIII in what was one of the most exciting MLCTF Finals in recent memory. Except for the unlikely blowout on Revenge, every single other map (4 in total) went into OverTime. I really hope some of the players took demos and are willing to post them, because there was so much going on it was difficult to keep track of it. Kudos also goes out to Here to Beat Zaul, since the match easily could have gone either way, as I'm sure The League of Shadows will tell you. Once again, congrats to nexus and The League of Shadows, and thanks to everyone for participating in yet another successful MLCTF season. We hope to see you all again next season. Captain signups are open now; Expect player signups shortly after.
Playoffs - Round 1
Posted By: Psycho @ Mon Jul 11, 2005 6:24 pm \\ Comments: 3
The first round of the playoffs came to an end last night in a pair of unexpected blowouts. Setting up would should be a pair of intense semi-finals. For the first time in MLUT history, one division has won all 4 first round playoff matches, this is how they went down.

team kryptonite -vs- big black oil riggers
Kryptonite, the strongest team representing division 1, took a huge blow just prior to the playoffs. Kryptonite lost their captain and best player, after league testing showed Bretzky was using performance enhancers. Guybrush stepped in as intern captain and fielded a competitive team, but it wasn't the same team that earned a #1 seeding.

Their opponent, the Big Black Oil Riggers had similar roster issues. During a last minute roster shuffle to avoid a forfeit in week 5 and make the playoffs, the Riggers lost the soul of their team Ballistic to the freeagent market. Nine, like Guybrush, made some roster adjustments to compensate and field a competitive team.

As the two rebuilt teams locked horns, no one knew what to expect. No one seemed to be able to predict an outright winner, mainly because thay had no idea who was gonna show up for the 2 teams. Fortunately, both teams had great lineups and it looked like we were in for some intense games, and the teams didn't dissapoint.

The first map was Orbital, great defense by both teams sent the match to overtime with a scoreless tie. Team Kryptonite was definitely getting the better chances, and it looked like only a matter of time before one of their effective runs was finally going to captalize. However, bad luck struck for Kryptonite as Wretchy lost connection to the server at a crucial point during a Riggers flag run. The Riggers were able to capatilize on the opportunity and win the map 1-0. Guybrush, for the second straight season, had been eliminated by a 5 vs 4 capture on Orbital. The second map NovemberCE, was just as close and exciting, The Riggers held on for a 2-1 win and advancing on to the semi-finals.

channel 4 news team -vs- here to beat zaul
An exciting match which turned out to be the closest of the first round matches, and the only match to go to a tiebreaker. AS both teams showed up with their top 5, well top 6 in the case of Channel 4 News who were just so deep this season. But you can only play 5 players at once, which made for some difficult decisions on the part of captain Mw I'm sure.

The first map was Terra, and it was the Nanm show. Not only did Nanm dominate on defense racking up almost double the amount of points as anyone on either team, but he also ran back and captured the only cap of the map as Here to Beat Zaul took the map 1-0.

The next map was Lucius and Spoooon subbed in for Robust. This time it was all about Walter, as Walter annihialted the HTBZ offense over and over again, giving Hedz and Mw enough time to bring one back for the 1-0 win, setting up the tiebreaker on Orbital.

While both teams played very well on Orbital and it was a close game as the 2-1 score would indicate, it was the team with better teamwork that came out on top. Over the course of the 20 minutes, Channel 4 had just 2 seals and 3 covers. On the otherside though, Here To Beat Zaul racked up 17 covers and 5 seals over the same time. With those kind of numbers, you will eventually come out on top and they did, 2-1.

chernobyl -vs- vortex
Another eagerly anticipated match with 2 very talented teams going head to head. Chernobyl, who hadn't lost a match since week 1 after picking up Desolation and Vortex who had slipped under the radar, quietly playing strong UT.

Things didn't look promising for Vortex early on though as Imperium was a no show, their most talented and most expensive player, while Chernobyl was sporting their top 5. Things looked even worse when Chernobyl capped on their first run on the first map going up 1-0 on Orbital with hardly any effort. Vortex didn't panic however and continued with their gameplan and eventually edged Chernobyl 3-1 as the combination of Racer and Ultranova ran an impressive O while the rest of the gang were holdin it down.

The second map was Revenge, Vortex's choice and again things didn't look good early on. Chernobyl jumped out to an early 1-0 lead and were cherry picking the the daylights out of Vortex. Last second save after last second save kept Vortex in it at 1-0 but they were still back on their heels. Vortex, confident in their system, stuck to it and eventually the caps started to roll in. Somewhere around 5-1 things dropped to a 4v4 and Vortex continued to dominate finishing up 10-1.

league of shadows -vs- retribution
In THE most anticipated match of round 1, a huge letdown. In what was supposed to be a tremendous matchup between 2 powerhouses, we got Superman versus Screech. Zilch was unable to make the match for Retribution, and any attempt to find a suitable replacement failed and as such Retribution had to field Kryptochild, who had performed well earlier in the season in a map.

The first map was Terra, and in what might have been the most pathetic display of UT ever, Kryptochild finished the 20 minute map with 1 frag and 1 point. Getting it after bubble spamming Mars with a minute and 30 seconds to go. He was playing flag D. Thus reducing Terra to pretty much a 5 vs. 4 scenario and a League of Shadows blowout.

The second map was Bollwerk, and it was much of the same only worse and the LEague of Shadows brought home cap after cap after cap. It's truly heartbreaking, as M3ss and ShatteredX were both playing some impressive UT... and especially ShatteredX who was playing some of the best UT I've ever witnessed.

Goodluck to the teams playing in the semifinals this week!
Rings
Posted By: Psycho @ Mon Jul 04, 2005 5:58 pm \\ Comments: 5
We are now in our 8th season of what has become the most successful league in the history of UT. The MLUT championship is the highest level of competition remaining in our game, and is the most sought after title amongst all players. With 7 seasons of champions now, you'd think everyone would have a ring, but that is not the case.

It's playoff time and prediction writers and ranters start to throw around the cliches. "Hungry for a championship", is often used for players who have yet to win one. "Big game experience" is usually attached to player's who have already won championships. Does one group actually have an advantage over the other? If the "Big game experience" was so crucial, why have just 6 players won multiple rings, and not a single person has reached 3. So far MLUT trends have shown that the "hungry" players have been far more succesful. This was proven last season with Omnibomb, as they dominated without a single player on their team holding a ring.

If the trends hold true, we should be able to predict the next champion based on how many rings each team currently has! Will this be accurate at all? Probably not, but it's always fun to speculate.

The first team we can knock off is Team Kryptonite. This team is chalk full of "big game" players with 5 rings among them. Guybrush, KFC, Ouchies and Ph34r with 2. In fact, the only "hungry" player starting on this team is Met. Poor Met, someone get that kid a Big Mac because he isn't winning a championship this season.

The next team full of winners about to be losers is the Channel 4 News Team. Mw, Calculus, Robust and FlowinProse are all sportin the bling bling. Someone must have replaced Walter's championship ring with The One Ring though, because he's been invisible all season.

Terminater what were you thinking... naming your team Chernobyl and then picking up players named Sabotage and Desolation who incidently both have MLUT rings. That's some terrible karma and this team is just ready to explode. However to be fair, Desolation didn't really win a ring, Blackmane won 2 and gave one to him.

Wow, there were just 3 teams with more than 1 player with a championship ring... now we have to get picky.

Here to beat Zaul, well since Zaul is already beaten, I guess this team can just pack it in now. I mean they did what their name says they are here to do, and they can't win the championship so they should just pack up now. How can they win a championship with NANM on the team whose already won 2 rings! And Herbal, is there a player whose had more shots at getting one without actually getting one? If this team wins it'll throw the entire universe out of alignment!

If someone on your team has a ring, that's bad, we've established that. But if your captain has a ring, that's gotta be REAL bad. Why is it worse? Because captains actually have to make decisions. I can see it now, Nine will choose Silith in the first round for his team because "the lava looks pretty" or Nexus will choose a Texas server because RoyalFlush had a ping of 1337 and he thought it was a good sign. Who knows what's gonna happen, but you can blame it on the captain. MarsFire, your gonna have to wait until MLUT 9 buddy :)

That brings us to Vortex. Vortex has a great chance of winning this, with just 1 ring on the team belonging to Racer. My advice to Nova is drop Racer, drop him like he's Xellos and pick up a "hungry" player. If Nova does this, they might be able to put up a fight against this season's champions....

Retribution. Not a single ring on this roster of stars means one thing. MLUT championship.
And it all comes down to the final round...

With a three way tie as well as another team only two points behind, there are several possible scenarios that may unfold tonight in the Division 1 matches. Stay tuned for I'll be attempting to sort through this mess and take a look at the various possibilities.
Bretzky Banned
Posted By: m3ss @ Tue Jun 28, 2005 3:20 pm \\ Comments: 4
Yesterday afternoon MLUT officials were provided with evidence depicting Bretzky using what appeared to be an aimbot. After a review of all the evidence provided to us, including; demos, videos, testimonial and logs we decided that there was enough to have an admin vote on the subject of whether or not Bretzky was indeed using an aimbot.

In what I believe is the first ever unanimous vote among MLUT admins, it was decided that the evidence provided was enough to prove that Bretzky was in fact botting.

Bretzky has been removed from MLCTF 8, banned from #MLUT and #MLCTF and is banned from future MLUT events. Bretzky's ban status will be subject to review at the start of every MLUT season with all other bans/suspensions. Bretzky's status in the MLUT Hall of Fame has also been revoked.

Guybrush has been set as the captain for Team Kryptonite and will need to pick up a player to replace Bretzky. If Guybrush decides to quit the season due to the decision of MLUT in this matter, Met will be deignated as team captain. If no attempt is made by either Guybrush or Met to stabilize the team, the league will enforce the asterix rule and bump Team Kryptonite from the playoffs.

Due to the fact that no evidence has been provided that shows Bretzky botted in an MLUT event, Team Kryptonite will not be punished and their record will remain intact.
Power Rankings - Week 3
Posted By: Weegie @ Sat Jun 25, 2005 3:15 am \\ Comments: 3
(1) 01. The League of Shadows – At this point you’d have to be crazy to not rank this team number one. They have displayed in three consecutive matches that they have the most reliable starting five, an effective offense no matter the map courtesy of Royal_Flush, and the definition of a playmaker in MarsFire.

(2) 02. Team Kryptonite – After a commanding victory in Week 3 over Damage Incorporated, Kryptonite now sits in the driver’s seat for Division 1. They are the number one seed in their division and they finish off the regular season against ECFC and [R]. ECFC should be another win, but [R] in Week 5 may be dangerous with their captain Krippler off inured reserve and back onto their nine man active roster.

(5) 03. Vortex – Vortex smoked their Week 3 opponent an NBA finals hampered {NBK} who played without their captain and major offensive threat Mavs. Imperium has been reliable so far and if he continues to be and their defense can hold, this will be a dangerous opponent come playoff time.

(3) 04. Channel 4 News Team – Channel 4 drops a spot this week in the power rankings not because they have been giving their entire roster playing time, but due to Vortex’s success. Walter will continue to be a safe bet for defense, but Mw and Hedz have thus far been inconsistent. C4 will need to step up their play to close out the regular season as they are tied in the standings currently with their final two opponents: Elisha Cuthbert Fan Club and Chernobyl.

(7) 05. Here To Beat Zaul – This team looked promising after Week 1, but when NANM was MIA in Week 2 against the strongest team in Division 2 those pre-season doubts re-emerged. However, Herbal remains committed and perhaps the strong victory this past week over a deflated Riggers lineup will maintain NANM’s interest.

(8) 06. Chernobyl – Chernobyl chalked up a dominant victory over ECFC, a fellow playoff contender, over whom they now hold a potential tiebreaker. Their decision to drop Wretchy and pick up Desolation appears to be a wise one. However, coming up this week will be another test for this team in the form of the Channel 4 News Team.

(12) 07. Retribution – Retribution will be throwing a party this weekend in honor of the return of their fearless, yet cursed, captain. They have a tough decision to make though in who to drop in exchange for Krippler. Will they cut the self-proclaimed “legendary” Cooltown or silently dominant Zilch? Either way, they really need a victory this week over Kryptonite to get them back into playoff contention.

(4) 08. Big Black Oil Riggers – The Riggers, down their captain who was graduating from Kindgergarten, faced the wrath of HTBZ’s top four this past week. However, with the weak Team Hate coming up, if the Riggers can win both maps, they will likely have the inside track to the playoffs for I don’t forsee {NBK} having a hope of doing any better than a split against –[LS]–. If {NBK} does win one map, then they would be tied with the Riggers, but the Riggers would hold the tie-breaker and would only need a split the following week to secure a playoff berth.

(6) 09. Natural Born Killaz – Unfortunately for {NBK} they appear headed in the wrong direction. Not having Mavs this past week and losing both maps puts them on the playoff bubble and within striking range of the Riggers. And now it appears that their top pick, Beastly, is attempting to attain enlightenment and will be missing their match vs. the top seeded League of Shadows.

(10) 10. Elisha Cuthbert Fan Club – Although <3EC is in the heart of the Division 1 playoff race, I believe their point status is artificially high due to their first week forfeit win. Stunna will be unable to complete the season for Wesdog’s team and Davinci’s ping is unstable so they will need to make a roster change as well as hope that lady luck is on their side. ECFC may still be able to crawl into the playoffs though due to Retribution and Damage Inc.’s forfeit losses.

(9) 11. Damage Incorporated – Granted NecroNinja was once again a noshow, Damage Inc. did scarcely put up a fight against Team Kryptonite. This team will definitely be more competitive if NN shows but that doesn’t seem like it will happen this season unfortunately.

(11) 12. Hate – Wingz’s desperate attempts to field the strongest starting five possible are admirable, but it is highly unlikely that he will be able to pull the upsets out of his ass (again) that his team needs to even have a shot at making the playoffs. However, Hate can still play the roll of spoiler and opportunity that Wingz will definitely jump on.

Honorable mentions go out to wesdog for having 4 caps and 11 covers over two maps, and BallistiC for accounting for all 5 caps (3 caps + 2 assists) for his team on McSwartzly.

The winner this week is Royal_Flush aka swishahouse. RF put up 3 caps, 1 assist, 11 covers, and 7 flag kills over two maps, to lead the League of Shadows to victory over a tough team, Here to Beat Zaul. Nice work RF, Nexus's League of Shadows is now #1 in standings as well as the #1 seeded team.
Power Rankings - Week 2

(2) 01. The League of Shadows - After demolishing Big Black Oil Riggers in Week 1, the League kept the momentum rolling in Week 2, defeating the very promising Here to Beat Zaul in two close maps. They are the only undefeated team left in the league.

(1) 02. Team Kryptonite - While still tied for the lead Division 1, Kryptonite was upset in Week 2 by the underdogs, Channel 4 News Team. C4 managed to defeat Bretzky and company on Bollwerk. Krypton rallied on McSwartzly, however, to win convincingly 3-1.

(11) 03. Channel 4 News Team - C4 put up a great showing in Week 2, splitting their match with the #1 seeded Team Kryptonite. C4 managed to defeat them on Bollwerk by a score of 2-1. They are holding strong in the #3 position in Division 1, and hope to increase their standings this week, as they play a weakened Retribution.

(4) 04. Big Black Oil Riggers - After a disheartening first Week loss which saw the riggers without two of their starting five, Nine's crew regrouped in Week 2, splitting maps with Vortex. Vortex managed to win Bollwerk in a very close game, but the riggers completed dominated on McSwartzly, winning easily 5-0.

(8) 05. Vortex - Vortex received easy points in Week 1, getting the forfeit win over Hate, who could not field five players. Week 2 saw them face off against Nine's riggers. After suffering a crushing defeat on McSwartzly, Vortex rallied to win an intense Bollwerk game to split the match. Vortex is #2 in Division 2.

(3) 06. Natural Born Killaz - After splitting maps with HTBZ in Week 1, NBK saw themselves facing perhaps the weakest team in MLUT history. Perhaps underestimating the weakened team, NBK was upset on Bollwerk 2-1 after crushing Hate on McSwartzly 5-0.

(5) 07. Here to Beat Zaul - After splitting maps with NBK in Week 1, HTBZ faced off against Nexus's Nameless, and came away winless. Lacking one of their triad of terror, NoAimNoMoves, HTBZ was unable to put together a win against the new #1 seed.

(6) 08. Chernobyl - Chernobyl hoped to regroup in Week 2 against the cursed team Retribution. After their Week 1 loss to Team Kryptonite, Termi's team was looking for an easy win. Despite not having their top five, Retribution managed to steal a map from Chernobyl, winning Bollwerk 1-0 in overtime.

(9) 09. Damage Inc - Receiving their only points from a forfeit in Week 1, D.inc looked to prove themselves in Week 2 against the defensive powerhouse Elisha Cuthbert Fan Club. They came away with a tie, after defeating <3EC on Bollwerk, and without their star player NecroNinja. If NN decides to play, this team has a lot of untapped potential.

(7) 10. Elisha Cuthbert Fan Club - <3EC received easy points in Week 1 after Retribution was forced to forfeit both maps. Hoping to keep the momentum going in Week 2, wesdog and company played a lackluster Damage Inc, who was missing their allstar NecroNinja. The Cuthbert Club only managed to split, winning Face pretty handidly 4-1, but losing on Bollwerk 3-2.

(12) 11. Hate - Starting out on the wrong foot, Hate had to forfeit in Week 1 due to lacking five players. It looked to be the same scenario come match time for Week 2 as well. Secrid and wingz rallied the team however, making some last minute trades, picking up Ripped for Blizzard. With a starting five barely over two thousand dollars, Hate managed to steal a map from NBK, winning Bollwerk 2-1. After the match, Secrid picked up TMO, which could really increase this team's chances to win.

(10) 12. Retribution - The curse continues for Retribution. After forfeiting both maps in Week 1 to <3EC, their woes continued in Week 2. Despite lacking Cooltown for map 1, McSwartzly, [R] seemed on the verge of a win....when Ripzown crashed, causing a map reset in which the team lost. Cooltown arrived halfway through map 2, Bollwerk, rallying the team and bringing home the game winning cap in overtime. Despite the win, [R] remains in last place in Division 1.

Honorable mentions go out this week to Mavz for his double Cycle and to Vulcan who put on quite the show for being the "5th Man".

The winner this week though clearly and undoubtly is MarsFire. Putting up nearly 300 points on Gauntlet with 6 covers, 8 seals and 36 flag kills. How do you top that? You have an UltraKill at the enemy flag stand in overtime to return and avoid the loss only to have your team cap for the win and the following run.... good job MarsFire.
Power Rankings - Week 1
Posted By: Psycho @ Wed Jun 15, 2005 4:30 pm \\ Comments: 5
(1) 01. Team Kryptonite - Bretzky, Guybrush and crew shutdown a strong Chernobyl team on back to back games of Orbital to prove that their inital #1 seeding was no mistake. This team has a very active and very strong starting 5 with talent on both offense and defense much like the Omnibomb of last season. An early championship favorite. Ph34r and Met were both underated steals, and Bretzky found them both.

(2) 02. Freakin' Geniuses - By then end of this season, I predict that Cort will be in a position to be entered in to the Hall of Fame in the captain category. After wining last season with a flawless draft, cort drafted another powerhouse team this season. Already ranked at number 2, Cort decided to tinker with his lineup some more by replacing Desolation and Rig with Chicken and Killhurtz. This move was a tremendous success as both players had fantastic games in week one as the Freakin' Genius that is Cort led his team to a sweep over a very good Big Black Oil Riggers.

(5) 03. Natural Born Killaz - Mavz had drafted himself a good on paper team going in to week one, but would that translate in to a cohesive unit in the server? Starting the match without their star player Beastly was not a good sign, and then getting trounced on Gauntlet 11-3 didn't help much either. Mavz pulled his team together though and rallied for a 3-1 win on orbital. Winning a map like orbital without their best player after being trounced shows this team has depth of both talent and character. If Beastly shows up now, or Mavz finds an equal replacement like TMO or Fader, this team will be kicking some serious ass.

(3) 04. Big Black Oil Riggers - Dropped only 1 spot on the rankings this week after losing both maps to Freakin' Geniuses, including a blowout on Gauntlet. This is still a very good team, and they showed it by coming inches away from winning Orbital only to have it taken away. A solid team that needs to find a dependable fifth, should bounce back in week 2.

(8) 05. Here to Beat Zaul - There were many questions surrounding his team after the draft and all of them were answered after round 1. Is Herbal still hungry for a championship? Yes. Will Nanm play? Yes. Do they have a 5th? Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. I almost jumped these guys even higher because they look so tasty now. Herbal and Nanm together on defense with Nitro and Weegie running and superstar on the rise Vulcan to round it out with Hype and Angel both capable off the bench.... eep, look out Team Kryptonite here comes a serious contender.

(4) 06. Chernobyl - Losing both maps in week one is never a good way to start, but losing them both in close fashion to the #1 seeded team kind of takes the sting of a little bit. Chernobyl is a solid team that just got stronger with the addition of Desolation, someone who can run a flag for this offense weak team. If Sab, Deso and Hubbs all show, this team is gonna put on a serious display of talent that not many teams in the league can match. Lookf or Chernobyl to have a solid week 2 showing.

(9) 07. Elisha Cuthbert Fan Club - Forfeit win in week 1 sees them jump 2 spots on the rankings as teams above them drop. Wesdog AND Davinci both have to show up every game to keep this team copetitive. Week 2 sees more easy scheduling benfits for the fan club though, jumping from a forfeit win to an unorganized Damage Inc.

(10) 8. Vortex - A strong dedicated top 5 with an active Imperium equipped with microphone? Cort compares this team to Omnibomb in the similarities of their makeup and this team could really make some noise in division 2. Week one saw them get a forfeit win and jump 2 spots in the rankings. Week 2 won't be as easy though, as they lock horns with the Big Black Oil Riggers.

(12) 9. Damage Inc - What an interesting week 1 for these guys... ranked at the bottom of the league to start the season. Forfeit thier first map. Make some random pickups to field a team, win map 2. Drop the players who just won for the players who didn't show up, and then jump 3 spots in the rankings. I'm just gonna wait to see what they do in week 2 before I make any further judgements on this team.

(6) 10. Retribution - Krippler loses his internet and the curse continues! Combined with m3ss being out of town, Retribution had to forfeit their first week match. If there was any a team that could bounce back from that though, it's this one. M3ss is back, Zilch is in for Krippler and the team is ready for week two versus Chernobyl.

(7) 11. Channel 4 News Team - Channel 4 looked solid after the draft, but after losing 2-0 to a slapped together team while the captain watches a Spurs game, it has me wondering if this team is capable.

(11) 12. Hate - Team was a complete and utter mess. Secrid is now in charge and has made some changes to bring in some active players, hopefully they can turn things around fast.

Pugs have returned to #MLUT and have been running very well for the last 2 days. We hope that #MLUT can be a one channel stop for MLUT Information, All Player Pugs and General UT Discussion. Already being the largest channel on the network it seems foolish to not utilize it for pugs with admins who try their best to maintain an enjoyable atmosphere.

We are also working on #MLCTF which will be an invite propug channel. This channel will differ from past propug channels in that there are specific guidleines for entry, and not a single person deciding who's in or not.

The top 80 ranked players from MLCTF 8 (60% of the players) will be given access. Also, players who have been in the top 40 of any past MLCTF will also be granted access, for players who still play but have not signed up for MLCTF 8.

We hope that this will once and for all solve the issue of musical chair pugs as we've proven time and again that we have longevity.

So good luck and happy pugging :)
